SMS Text Messages Cost £374.49/Meg!
At 5p per text most people don’t think twice about sending a quick text message to a friend or even firing back and forth rapid messages in a text conversation. However when you add up the cost per byte of information, as a scientist at the University of Leicester has done, you see quite how much of a scam text messaging is.
According to Dr Nigel Bannister the cost of an SMS message can be broken down like this.
The maximum size for a text message is 160 characters, which takes 140 bytes because there are only 7 bits per character in the text messaging system, and we assume the average price for a text message is 5p. There are 1,048,576 bytes in a megabyte, so that’s 1 million/140 = 7490 text messages to transmit one megabyte. At 5p each, that’s £374.49 per MB
Now comparing that to the cost of downloading data from the Hubble Space Telescope which costs £8.85 to get the data down from the telescope itself and costs about £85 for the whole process of getting it from telescope to end user we can see how much of a scam the mobile networks have got going.
How the hell they can justify this beggars belief, well aside from the fact that they are capitalist shit bags
Anyway since this post has a link to the Hubble telescope I’ve got an excuse to post a picture of the Ultra Deep Field.
A far better use of bandwidth than PRTY 2NITE @ SHZZAS or whatever
wow amazing
